Kino Lorber and Redemption Films celebrate the cinematic legacy of director Jess Franco Deluxe Blu-ray and DVD editions of The Awful Dr. Orlof, A Virgin Among the Living Dead and Nightmares Come at Night presented in association with Eurociné to be released in August 2013!
Kino Lorber and Redemption Films celebrate the cinematic legacy of director Jess Franco with deluxe Blu-ray and DVD editions of three of his most important films, presented in association with Eurociné: The Awful Dr. Orlof (1962), A Virgin Among the Living Dead (1973) and Nightmares Come at Night (1970). Though highly regarded among cult movie enthusiasts, Franco is a notorious figure within the world of horror, for the savage eroticism and obsessive nature of his films, which defy the conventional structure and tone of the typical thriller. "Too arty for the horror crowd and too macabre and lowbrow for the art crowd," Fangoria editor Chris Alexander wrote, "He existed in a world of his own, a class of his own."
Born Jesús Franco Manera in 1930, credited on a variety of pseudonyms (such as Clifford Brown and A.M. Frank), he is best known as Jess Franco, director of such horror/sexploitation films as Female Vampire (1973), Exorcism (1975), and Vampyros Lesbos (1971). Franco directed almost 200 features, in virtually every genre, and was perhaps at his best when working with his muses, Soldedad Miranda (1943-1970) and Lina Romay (1954-2012). Because he made so many films, which were released in multiple versions and under various titles, and because he so frequently employed a pseudonym, a complete Franco filmography is likely impossible to compile. Franco died Tuesday April 2, 2013, at the age of 82, after being hospitalized for a stroke on March 27.
"Franco was, and is, a true hero of exploitation cinema. A man who loved, ate and slept film," recalls Redemption founder Nigel Wingrove, "and who in his heart was an artist and like most artists he had his flaws and weaknesses but ultimately what made him an artist was that he could do nothing else but make films. He may have used a camera rather than a paintbrush and film instead of a canvas, but that was because film was his blood, and he only stopped filming when his blood stopped flowing and his heart, like his camera, finally stopped."
In August, 2013, Redemption will commemorate Franco with a special Blu-ray edition of his breakthrough film, The Awful Dr. Orlof (1962), featuring "The Horror of Orlof," one of the last videotaped interviews with Franco (directed by David Gregory and produced by Elijah Drenner). Newly mastered in HD, this is the original French-language version (the film was later censored and padded with inconsequential footage for release in Spain). Among other features, the disc will include a brand new commentary track by Tim Lucas (founder and editor of Video Watchdog), as well as a newly-filmed remembrances by Franco's friends and collaborators (directed by Daniel Gouyette).
Lesser-known in the director's canon (because for more than 40 years it was considered a lost film), Nightmares Come at Night is an erotic thriller starring Soledad Miranda and Diana Lorys. In the years since its rediscovery, Nightmares has become embraced as quintessential Franco for its facile blending of horror, eroticism, and the surreal. The disc will feature a Lucas commentary, and a second memorial video by Gouyette, and a third mini-documentary to be announced.
The pičce de résistance of the collection is A Virgin Among the Living Dead, which features Franco's original cut in its entirety (Christina, Princess of Eroticism), as well as the more commonly-available recut version (with zombie footage directed by Jean Rollin: A Virgin Among the Living Dead), as well as a deleted orgy scene, featuring Alice Arno, which was shot for a third incarnation of the film. The disc also includes "Mysterious Dreams," one of the last videotaped interviews with Franco (directed by Gregory and produced by Drenner), as well as a third collection of posthumous tributes by the director's friends and collaborators.
All three films were newly-mastered in HD from archival film elements from Eurocine Paris, are presented in French with optional English subtitles or English dubbed, produced for video by Bret Wood.
In 2014, Redemption will continue to pay its respects to Franco with at least three additional Blu-rays of his notorious films.
As Tim Lucas recently wrote in a memorial piece, "Jess Franco is finished with life, but life is far from finished with him."

Unfortunately, that privacy is short-lived as she discovers a “peeping tom" next door neighbor that spies on her all the time. Kino Lorber and Redemption are proud to announce the Blu-ray and DVD releases of Cold Eyes of Fear, directed by Enzo G. Castellari, the director of the original The Inglorious Bastards; and The Sinful Nuns of St. Valentine, directed by Sergio Grieco, and loosely based on a play by Victor Hugo.
Both films come to Blu-ray and DVD on May 21, 2013, with individual SRPs of $24.95 each for the Blu-ray editions, and $19.95 each for the DVD editions. Both are mastered in HD from the original 35mm negatives. Cold Eyes of Fear is English dubbed and includes the original theatrical trailer plus original trailers of other Redemption releases. The Sinful Nuns of St. Valentine is presented in Italian with optional English subtitles, and includes original trailers of other Redemption releases.
During the golden age of the grindhouse and the waning years of the drive-in, the Italian film industry provided American exploitation screens with some of its most savory product. In addition to the more commonly known genres of spaghetti western, Eurocrime and supernatural horror, Italian filmmakers fused other ingredients together to form even more eclectic types of film. Cold Eyes of Fear is a fascinating hybrid of Poliziotteschi (police films) and gialli (erotic horror), while The Sinful Nuns of St. Valentine embodies all the classic traits of the controversial genre known as nunsploitation.

It has been hailed as "amazingly disturbing" (Dread Central), “extreme and uncompromised"ť (Roger Ebert) and “one of the best true crime films ever made" (DVD Talk). Now from the punishing mind of writer/producer/director Jim Van Bebber comes his epic of hallucinatory horror like you've never seen it before: This is the ultimate account of Charles Manson and his followers, a blood-soaked saga that takes you from their drug-fueled orgies, to their grisly massacres, and into the legacy of depravity that survives today. It is a singular vision of nihilistic evil that remains alarmingly original, unapologetically graphic and shockingly real. These are the most infamous crimes of our time as depicted by one of the most dangerous underground filmmakers of all time. This is THE MANSON FAMILY.

Kino Lorber and Redemption are proud to announce the Blu-ray and DVD releases of two more films by French cult horror filmmaker Jean Rollin: The Grapes of Death and Night of the Hunted.
The films come to Blu-ray and DVD on April 23rd, each with individual SRPs of $29.95 for the Blu-ray edition, and $24.95 for the DVD edition, mastered in HD from the original 35mm negatives. Both come packed with special features.
The Grapes of Death includes an introduction by Jean Rollin; an interview with Jean Rollin, by Patrick Lambert and Frederick Durand (2007, 49 min.), in which Rollin discusses his varied literary influences; a 16-page booklet with an essay by Tim Lucas, editor of Video Watchdog; original theatrical trailer and original trailers of other Rollin films.
Night of the Hunted includes an introduction by Jean Rollin; two deleted sex scenes (8 min.); an excerpt of an interview with Jean Rollin by Joshua T. Gravel; a 16-page booklet with an essay by Tim Lucas, editor of Video Watchdog; the original theatrical trailer and original trailers of other Rollin films.
Taking leave of the erotic vampire films that had comprised most of his work until then, The Grapes of Death (1978) was Rollin's first foray into the gore movie. Trading the dreamlike tableaux of negligee-clad vampiresses for scenes of outrageous violence, Rollin finally earned the respect of horror-philes that had so long eluded him.
Night of the Hunted (1980) is another departure for Rollin -- a Cronenbergian tale about an amnesiac woman held prisoner in an antiseptic high-rise. In recent years, Night of the Hunted has become embraced by Rollin's admirers as his most sophisticated film, thanks in large part to a mesmerizing performance by Brigitte Lahaie (Fascination).

Release Date: 6/11/13! Vinegar Syndrome proudly presents the home video debut of Robert Flaxman and Daniel Goldman’s portrait of regional filmmaking gone awry.
In the winter of 1974, a naive independent filmmaker based in Chicago found funding to make his first feature, to be titled “The Last Affair.” The one stipulation mandated by his financial bakers was that the movie needed to include hardcore sex scenes. A LABOR OF LOVE documents the ensuing heart felt and earnest attempt to create an X rated movie. Between struggles with the cast and problems with crew and locations, the production forges on in a manner NBC News described as “A true human comedy” and Hadrian Belove of Cinefamily acclaimed as “a lost vérité masterpiece … a movie-about-movies documentary classic.” Directed by Robert Flaxman and Daniel Goldman 1975 / USA / 67 min / 1.85:1 / Color

Among the more personal of these films is Schoolgirl Hitchhikers (Jeunes filles impudiques), which reflects many of the themes and fascinations that run through his esoteric body of work.
Joelle Coeur (Rollin's The Demoniacs) and Gilda Arancio star as a pair of lovers enjoying a blissful cross-country hike. But the carefree erotic film turns suddenly dark when the women are set upon by a band of thieves who think they have stolen their loot, and use sadistic means to force a confession. IT'S HELL ON EARTH AND ONLY A HALF-MAN, HALF-CYBORG CAN DEFEAT THE FORCES OF HADES AND SAVE HUMANITY
The Instant Cult Favorite From Upcoming Auteur Steven Kostanski Will Thrill Sci-Fi and Action Fans When It Comes To the U.S. From Dark Sky Films, April 30, 2013
"Works first and foremost by being genuinely, legitimately funny." - Matt Looker, TheShiznit.co.uk
"What sets MANBORG apart and really makes it worth watching is the craftsmanship." - Josh Hurtado, Twitchfilm.com
The forces of Hell have risen to the surface of the Earth to wreak unspeakable havoc on humanity. And it will take a real superhuman to save the world. Or at least Manborg - a spectacular creature of the future and the hero of MANBORG, the cult favorite sci-fi/fantasy homage coming to select theaters and DVD on April 30, 2013, from Dark Sky Films.
The armies of hell have taken over the Earth, and all that stands in the way of the villainous Count Draculon and humanity's total extinction is a motley crew of misfits led by the mighty Manborg: a warrior who's half-man, half-machine, but all hero.
Once a young soldier killed during the first war against hell, Manborg (Matthew Kennedy, Lazer Ghosts 2) reawakens in the future, rebuilt as a walking weapon and mankind's last hope. Struggling to learn the secret of his origins, Manborg unwittingly befriends a post-apocalyptic Australian punker (Conor Sweeney, Heart of Karl), a knife-wielding vixen (Meredith Sweeney, Father's Day) and a kung fu master (dubbed by Kyle Herbert of DRAGON BALL Z, STREET FIGHTER) before finally squaring off against Count Draculon (Adam Brooks, Father's Day) in a desperate and bloody bid to take back the Earth.
This campy, comedic action flick, which Variety called "enjoyably ridiculous," is also an affectionate and clever tribute to fan favorite '80s films and videogames like The Terminator, RoboCop and Mortal Kombat.
Peter Howell of the Toronto Star called it "an energizing and cheesy homage to and parody of 1980s sci-fi horror action movies. ... It's also a marvel of DIY makeup, costuming and special effects." Matt Looker of website The Shiznit called it "perfect parody."
MANBORG is a tour de force for writer-director-editor-makeup artist Steven Kostanski, whose credits include the horror hit Silent Hill and Guillermo del Toro's forthcoming sci-fi adventure Pacific Rim. This lo-fi sci-fi epic from infamous filmmaking collective Astron-6 (Father's Day) was met with an uproariously enthusiastic reception from audiences. Executive produced by TIFF Midnight Madness guru Colin Geddes (Ultra 8 Pictures) and Toronto After Dark's Peter Kupowsky,MANBORG celebrated its world premiere at Austin's 2011 Fantastic Fest, and also impressed fans at the Toronto After Dark Film Festival, Fantasia, and has played more than 30 major film festivals worldwide including Whistler, Lund in Sweden, Boston Underground, U.K. Sci-Fi, and Neuchatel in Switzerland.

Severin Films announces the May 7th Blu-ray debut of Jim VanBebber’s legendary, award-winning indie THE MANSON FAMILY on the 10th anniversary of its original release. US theatrical dates in 20 major cities are scheduled through March and April and new poster artwork has been created by artist Stephen Romano for the occasion. VanBebber’s highly anticipated new short GATOR GREEN will accompany many of the screenings and will also be included in the extras-packed Special Edition Blu-Ray release.
The theatrical run launches at Landmark Theatres locations in Denver and San Francisco on March 22nd and will continue through April taking in New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Boston and many more (see below for a partial list of engagements, with more to be announced in the coming weeks).
THE MANSON FAMILY delivers an uncompromising, brutal vision of the collapse of the “Love Generation.” On a ranch outside of LA the hippie dream is perverting into something evil. What was once an oasis of free love and acid trips has become ground zero for a madman’s paranoid visions. An average group of kids, the "Family", become engulfed in a delusional world where torment and slaughter is considered the path to righteousness. The Manson Family is a dizzying, rapid-fire vision of the sex and violence that unifies the misguided group, and at the direction of their leader, ends in a brutal spree leaving seven people dead in 48 hours. Now re-mastered in stunning HD for the first time ever in America.
Extras include an all-new Director’s commentary, the brand new short GATOR GREEN, the uncut version of the previously censored, feature length documentary THE VANBEBBER FAMILY on the film’s near-mythic production, and much more.

SHOT IN STUNNING HIGH-CONTRAST BLACK & WHITE ALEXANDER VARTANOV’s BULLET COLLECTOR CAPTURES AN INTENSE TALE OF RUSSIAN YOUTH
AVAILABLE ON DVD AND VOD FEBRUARY 19 FROM ARTSPLOITATION FILMS
Artsploitation Films, the rising American film distribution company, continues to deliver edgy international movies to North American audiences with its fourth release, BULLET COLLECTOR. The film is the powerful debut of Russian director Alexander Vartanov. A unique and visually striking work, the film examines the traumas of a wide-eyed 14-year-old boy, struggling to cope with a terrible home life dominated by an angry mother and a stepfather who can’t stand the sight of him. His school routine is plagued by brutal attacks from bullies, and his life becomes even more nightmarish after he is sent to a hellish reform school. Losing himself in a fantasy world where he is loved by a beautiful girlfriend and able to defeat his oppressors, the boy’s reality tells of a very different life. But is he actually just a timid teen destined for abuse, or will he gain the strength to fight off his attackers? Recalling the world of Antoine Doinel in Truffaut’s The 400 Blows, this unsettling, moody masterwork updates that classic by giving it a distinctly Russian flavor.
Artsploitation’s release of BULLET COLLECTOR will arrive on DVD for the first time ever on February 19. The DVD extras include a deleted scene, cast interviews and a 12-page collectable booklet.
Artsploitation’s third release, Japan’s HARD ROMANTICKER, arrived on DVD January 22. With tons of ultra-violence, rampaging youths and nihilistic retribution HARD ROMANTICKER is a modern take on A Clockwork Orange, Yakuza style. The DVD extras include a fully illustrated booklet containing critical analysis of the film by writer Patrick Macias – a renowned expert on Japanese pop culture.
Last week Artsploitation was pleased to announce their first two theatrical releases ever. Both are award winning films by young, female directors: VANISHING WAVES and CLIP. This dynamic double-header will debut at Cinema Village in New York on March 15, 2013 with more cities to follow.

Kino Classics Releases the 1932 cult classic White Zombie, starring Bela Lugosi, on Blu-ray and DVD!
HD Restoration from Archival 35mm Elements
Kino Classics is proud to announce the Blu-ray and DVD release of the 1932 cult classic White Zombie, starring legendary horror film icon Bela Lugosi in one of his most famous roles. One of the earliest films dealing with the Haitian zombie myth (which would eventually transform into one of the most enduring subgenres of the horror film), White Zombie is a chance for audiences to see Bela Lugosi in one of his finest roles.
Available now on Blu-ray and DVD, with a SRP of $29.95 for the Blu-ray and $24.95 for the DVD. Both come mastered in HD from a 35mm fine grain master, and are presented in a dual edition that includes both a digitally-restored version, as well as the raw, unenhanced film transfer (with natural grain intact). This release also features an audio commentary by film historian Frank Thompson. Other special features include "Intimate Interviews" (1932), a 6-minute interview with Bela Lugosi (mastered in HD from 35mm elements), and a 1951 theatrical reissue trailer.
After becoming an overnight success with his starring role in Tod Browning's Dracula, Bela Lugosi struggled to find roles worthy of his acting talent, without parodying his depiction of Bram Stoker's notorious count.
Independently produced by Edward Halperin, White Zombie was one of the rare films that provided Lugosi with just such an opportunity. In spite of its budgetary limitations, White Zombie manages to be a remarkably atmospheric treatment of the Haitian zombie myth, which would evolve into one of the most popular and enduring subgenres of the horror film.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! The water is tainted. The Taint poisons the minds of men. It turns them into raging misogynists: monsters who want nothing more than to crush women's heads with rocks (or other objects). When society is transformed into a land of sadistic violence and horrible brutality, it is up to Phil O'Ginny and his hot friend, Misandra, to combat the horrible evil that is The Taint. Can they survive in a world brimming with castration and endless head crusing?!

Kino Lorber Releases British sex comedy The Sex Thief, a film by Martin Campbell, on Blu-ray and DVD
SRP (Blu-ray) $24.95 SRP (DVD)$19.95

From the director of Casino Royale and Goldeneye Mastered in HD from original 35mm material!
Kino Lorber is proud to announce the Blu-ray and DVD release of The Sex Thief, the first feature film by director Martin Campbell. The film is a low-budget homage to the James Bond series and helped launch the career of Martin Campbell, who would later direct Goldeneye and Casino Royale.
From its opening title sequence, it is apparent that director Martin Campbell intended his first feature, a low-budget sex romp called The Sex Thief, to be an homage to the James Bond series. Irresistible to women of every variety, the roguish title character (David Warbeck) channels his inner Connery, muttering witty double entendres, relishing the danger of his secret mission, forever sidetracked by beautiful women.
The Sex Thief is especially fun to watch knowing that Campbell eventually achieved his dream--directing not one but two James Bond films (Goldeneye and Casino Royale), as well as the tongue-in-cheek blockbusters Green Lantern and The Mask of Zorro. The Sex Thief is a fascinating precursor to those large-budget Hollywood films showing that, from the beginning of his career, Campbell knew the kinds of films he wanted to make and had the talent to deliver on his promise.

IMPULSE PICTURES PRESENTS TWO NEW THRILLERS IN THE NIKKATSU EROTIC FILMS COLLECTION!
FAIRY IN A CAGE and FEMALE TEACHER: IN FRONT OF THE STUDENTS
JAPANESE EROTIC DELIGHTS — WITH AN EDGE! A double-knotted chalkboard-scratching double feature from the masterminds of Nikkatsu! During World War II, the tyrannical Judge Murayama uses his military power to imprison and torture innocent people. Suspected of helping an anti-government movement, the lovely Namiji Kikushima (Naomi Tani) is captured, along with a local kabuki actor. Helpless and unable to escape, the two are subjected to a grueling series of tortures including rope bondage and physical assault. As the Judge and his evil assistant Kayo revel in their perverse fetishes, a new military recruit they’ve hired may be the key to prisoners’ freedom. He loves Namiji and will do what he can to help her, even if it means betrayal to organize an escape!
Impulse Pictures is proud to present FAIRY IN A CAGE, one of the most controversial films of 1970’s Japanese cinema, in a brand-new high-definition transfer taken from the original 35mm camera negative.
In FEMALE TEACHER: IN FRONT OF THE STUDENTS, the lovely Reiko has taken a new teaching job at a creepy old high school. She is an extremely attractive woman and the young students in her class have fallen for her. One night, after tennis practice, she is brutally assaulted in the locker room shower by a man with a stocking over his face. Left on the floor naked and in shock, she discovers a single puzzle piece left behind by the crazed man. A few days later, a pair of students enact a perverted sexual revenge on Reiko for kicking someone off the tennis team. Could one of these students be the man who brutalized her in the locker room? Who owns the strange puzzle piece? As the mystery unfolds, Reiko must come to terms with her own sexual urges and fate.
With shocking scenes of torture and violence, including a shower assault that clocks in at almost four minutes, FEMALE TEACHER: IN FRONT OF THE STUDENTS is one of the more unforgiving and jaw-dropping films in Impulse Pictures’ “Nikkatsu Erotic Films Collection.”
