Film Fanaddict News : Grindhouse Releasing Presents Duke Mitchell's GONE WITH THE POPE March 12th!
Posted by Miranda on 2010/3/10 18:45:11 (3 reads)

Open in new windowWorld Premiere March 12 at Hollywood's Egyptian Theatre

Grindhouse Releasing and the American Cinematheque will present the late, great Duke Mitchell's never-before-seen exploitation masterpiece GONE WITH THE POPE on Friday, March 12 at 7:30 p.m., at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood.

Duke Mitchell was an Italian Rudy Ray Moore, a popular nightclub performer and self-proclaimed “Mr. Palm Springs” whose long-running act with Sammy Petrillo was featured in BELA LUGOSI MEETS A BROOKLYN GORILLA. Mitchell went on to use his talents and show business connections to produce two of the most entertaining films of the Seventies, which he wrote, directed, produced, scored and starred in.

GONE WITH THE POPE stars Duke Mitchell as Paul, a paroled gangster with an unholy scheme: to kidnap the pope and charge "a dollar from every Catholic in the world" as the ransom. Shot in 1975 as KISS THE RING, GONE WITH THE POPE was unfinished at the time of Duke Mitchell's death in 1981.

Sage Stallone and Bob Murawski of Grindhouse Releasing rediscovered GONE WITH THE POPE in 1995 and vowed to save it from obscurity. Academy Award-winning film editor Murawski (THE HURT LOCKER, SPIDER-MAN 1,2 & 3) spent 15 years completing GONE WITH THE POPE from the surviving film elements.

Open in new windowMPI Media Group announced it has acquired all North American rights to THE LAST LOVECRAFT: RELIC OF CTHULHU, a stunningly original new comedy-thriller. The movie will receive a Fall 2010 theatrical release through MPI’s Dark Sky Films label, to be followed by DVD and Video On Demand in October.

The distribution deal for THE LAST LOVECRAFT: RELIC OF CTHULHU was negotiated by Greg Newman, executive vice president of MPI Media Group, and Nate Bolotin of XYZ Films.

Jeff and his friend Charlie embark on an adventure to protect the relic from falling into the hands of the Starspawn and his minions, who want to release the hideous cosmic entity Cthulhu back into the world.

“We are thrilled to be a part of this flat-out hilarious picture that’s a perfect blend of sci-fi, buddy picture and road movie,” said Greg Newman. “The film’s imaginative and unique style will appeal to wide audiences.”

Nate Bolotin said, “MPI and Dark Sky have proved time and again to be the ideal distributors for daring and independent movies, and we’re proud that THE LAST LOVECRAFT: RELIC OF CTHULHU will join their formidable lineup of films.”

THE LAST LOVECRAFT: RELIC OF CTHULHU marks the feature directorial debut of Henry Saine, whose career was launched with two hilarious short films: “Not in My Family” and “Love Royale.” It is also the writing and producing debut of Devin McGinn, who co-stars as Charlie. Open in new windowMODERN HORROR MASTER PAYS TRIBUTE TO THE POPULAR PASTIME OF GRAVE-ROBBING – AND THE GOOD OLD DAYS OF FRIGHT FILMS

Buried secrets will eventually resurface – along with the bodies that carry them – in I SELL THE DEAD, a horror movie that brings the fog-filled thrills of old to a new generation of fear fans. Produced by shock cinema master Larry Fessenden (The House of The Devil), who also co-stars, the movie claws its way onto Blu-ray and DVD from IFC Films via MPI Media Group on March 30, 2010.

It was a time of ghouls, ghosts and most ghastly of all, the fine art of grave-robbing. In this homage to the rich gothic style of Britain’s Hammer Films, Dominic Monaghan of “The Lord of the Rings” and “Flash Forward” stars as 19th century corpse snatcher Arthur Blake, who pilfered the cemeteries and coffins of England until his capture by police. But just before Blake is to meet the hangman’s noose, he will confess to a peculiar priest (Ron Perlman of “Hellboy” and “Sons of Anarchy”) his gruesome tale of vampires, zombies and cadaver-dealing that takes him from the savagery of the criminal underworld to the terrors of the undead.

Open in new windowSynopsis:

Imagine living in a small town where everything is safe and happy…until suddenly it isn’t. Imagine your friends and neighbors going quickly and horrifically insane. In a terrifying tale of the “American Dream” gone horribly wrong, four friends find themselves trapped in their hometown in The Crazies, a reinvention of the George Romero classic directed by Breck Eisner from a screenplay by Ray Wright (Pulse, Case 39) and Scott Kosar (The Amityville Horror, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre).

David Dutten (Timothy Olyphant) is sheriff of Ogden Marsh, a picture-perfect American town with happy, law-abiding citizens. But one night, one of them comes to a school baseball game with a loaded shotgun, ready to kill. Another man burns down his own house…after locking his wife and young son in a closet inside. Within days, the town has transformed into a sickening asylum; people who days ago lived quiet, unremarkable lives have now become depraved, blood-thirsty killers, hiding in the darkness with guns and knives. Sheriff Dutten tries to make sense of what’s happening as the horrific, nonsensical violence escalates. Something is infecting the citizens of Ogden Marsh…with insanity.

Now complete anarchy reigns as one by one the townsfolk succumb to an unknown toxin and turn sadistically violent. In an effort to keep the madness contained, the government uses deadly force to close off all access and won’t let anyone in or out – even those uninfected. The few still sane find themselves trapped: Sheriff Dutten; his pregnant wife, Judy (Radha Mitchell); Becca (Danielle Panabaker), an assistant at the medical center; and Russell (Joe Anderson), Dutten’s deputy and right-hand man. Forced to band together, an ordinary night becomes a horrifying struggle for survival as they do their best to get out of town alive.

After suffering a parent's worst nightmare -- the abduction and murder of their eight-year-old daughter -- Guy (David Starzyk, “Prison Break”, “Desperate Housewives”) and Laura Dykstra (Sean Young, Blade Runner, No Way Out) decide to make a fresh start and, hopefully, save their marriage. They move to a charming old house in need of repair, hoping the project will alleviate their pain. But not long after moving, Laura senses an angry presence that may be the spirit of her murdered daughter. Disturbing messages appear on the walls in fresh paint and a neighbor (M.Emmet Walsh, Youth in Revolt, Christmas with the Kranks) reports seeing a young girl staring at him from inside the house. Is this mischievous spirit their daughter or another entity using the grieving couple for its own sinister purposes?

― Independent Film Quarterly

The infamous, real-life killing spree perpetrated by two mysterious shooters is chillingly dramatized in the horror-thriller D.C. Sniper, on DVD March 16 from North American Motion Pictures (NAMP).

D.C. Sniper takes you back to October 2002 when John Allen Muhammad (Ken Foree, 2004’s Dawn of the Dead) and his teenage accomplice Lee Boyd Malvo (Tory N. Thompson), held Washington D.C. and surrounding areas hostage with a terrifying three-week murder spree.

The deadly duo shot and killed 10 people and wounded three more from the specially rigged trunk of a 1990 Chevrolet Caprice sedan before finally being apprehended, allowing the entire country to breathe a sigh of relief.

During three trials and years of appeals, Muhammad professed his innocence and Malvo (who testified against him) tried to “make amends,” but to no avail. Muhammed was executed by lethal injection Nov. 10, 2009 and Malvo, protected by juvenile law, is serving a life sentence without possibility of parole.

Open in new windowCreature Feature Film of the New Millenium!

In this creature feature, a group of college friends on a spring break camping trip are stalked and slashed by an unknown creature with the ability to make them hallucinate through sound waves. The survivors hold up refuge in an isolated farmhouse, cut off from all communication. Now, they have to come up with a plan to kill this unrelenting creature before it kills them.

Banshee!!! takes the idea of the legendary Irish myth and spins it around into a terrifying and unstoppable monster. The initial concept for the creature was developed by co-producer Andrew Gerhard. Dan Anderson did the actual design and the art. Director Colin Theys then took his designs and created the digital model for use in the film.

The physical makeup of the creature is unique. It's got a long face. It doesn't have a mouth. Instead it has vibrating flaps it uses to produce sound which allows it to take on the image of whatever it wants to be. It has wings that fold up on its back. It was designed to be something that could be done without a suit. "We wanted to stay away from the guy in a suit monster," said Theys. "As a CG artist, I hate when you see a guy in a suit and all of the sudden they cut to CGI and it looks totally different. The effects matter to me."

Theys also states, "We put a ton of effort into the movie to make Banshee!!! standout. In the effects department, we have over a hundred and thirty CGI shots. I handle all of the visual effects, so I'm able to ensure that every effects shot looks the same. There's no variation, each shot looks to be the same quality as the one's before it and after it. It's also got lots of stuff: cool sets, lots of characters, lots of death. We tried to make it different. The producer and I went out and watched a lot of indie horror films to see what worked and what didn't work, so that we wouldn't fall into the same pitfalls that they did. It's shot on video, we've got a good cinematographer who worked really hard to make the film look good. Banshee!!! has lots of action, it's fast-paced, and short but sweet. I hate when low-budget horror movies run too long, it just sort of highlights their flaws."
